Durable Aluminum Gangways & Ramps

The marine alloy aluminum used in our gangways and dock ramps resists corrosion, will not rot, split, or rust, and does not require painting or other protective coatings. All of our gangways and dock access ramps have a grooved surface that provides slip resistance when dry or wet.

Our gangways and ramps are easier to handle than gangways or ramps of any other material because of the light weight aluminum; combine that with its strength and rugged construction, and we have built a durable and easy to move aluminum gangway or dock ramp.

They can be transported easily with your very own vehicle and in most cases, can be put into place or removed without cranes or special equipment.

The only difference between a dock ramp and a gangway is that ramps are typically 12-14’ in length with no railings, while gangways are 16' and longer with railings.

How Long Does Your Gangway Need to Be?

Length is set by two things: how high the dock sits above the water, and how far the water moves. On a tidal or fluctuating site, measure the height difference between the shore landing and the dock at the lowest water you expect. That worst case sets the slope, and the slope sets the length.

For an ADA-accessible gangway: federal rules allow a running slope no steeper than 1:12, so every 1 ft of height difference needs at least 12 ft of gangway. A 2 ft difference at low water needs 24 ft or more.

What is the difference between a dock ramp and a gangway?

Length and railings. Ramps typically run 12 to 14 ft with no railings. Gangways run 16 ft and longer and carry railings.

How much weight can an aluminum gangway carry?

Our residential gangways are rated for 50 to 100 lb per sq ft of live load, and commercial gangways for 60 to 125 lb per sq ft, depending on length and configuration.

How long should my gangway be?

It depends on the height of the dock above the water and how much the water level changes. Measure at the lowest water you expect. For ADA access, every 1 ft of height difference needs at least 12 ft of gangway.

Can your gangways be ADA accessible?

Usually not. Aluminum is light enough that most gangways can be moved into place or removed without cranes or special equipment.

1.5” white cedar decking is used with our Alummikon Frame and works great with commercial floats. White cedar offers the same maintenance and requirements as thin cedar decking, but offers extra strength and durability along with the Alummikon frame. This floating dock was built to with stand rough conditions.
